Indigenous People’s Rights in the Field

The United Nations Mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) Human Rights Centre is hosting "Indigenous People’s Rights in the Field” from August 6-12, 2012 in Amubri, Talamanca, Costa Rica.

Intended Audience: Human Rights advocates working with NGOs and civil society organizations, practitioners, academics and students with a particular interest in indigenous populations, international law, environmental law and human rights. Our past participants have come from a wide range of fields with diverse work and educational experiences.

Course Format: The course will include one day of introductory classwork in a workshop format on the UPEACE main campus followed by the field trip to Amubri that will include visits to community associations, meetings with community elders, school teachers, medical service providers, etc. The field trip is intense and will include debriefing sessions every day. Finally, there will be a wrap up session in Puerto Viejo before the group returns to San Jose on the evening of 12th August.

Course Language: English (Spanish skills are desirable, but not required)

Costs: $1,700 USD (if taken for academic credit) / $1,350 USD (non-credit/audit).

Enrollment: A minimum of 10 participants is required so that the fieldtrip can take place. The total number of participants is restricted to 25.
