We're proud to invite you to the start of a new (and already fifth) series of three Chat Workshops on mepeace.org! This time we would like to discuss with you the topic 'Diaspora and Conflict'.
According to Wikipedia, a diaspora (Greek for 'scattering [of seeds]') "is any movement of a population sharing common national and/or ethnic identity" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora).
For those of you who want to learn more about the topic before Sunday, a useful introduction on the topic is Robin Cohen's 'Global Diasporas: An Introduction':
http://www.amazon.com/Global-Diasporas-Introduction-No/dp/0295976209/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1277282269&sr=1-1.
It will be the main aim of this series to identify and describe the impact of diasporas on the (Middle East) conflict, but, also - as we have peacemakers from very diverse backgrounds and descents -on conflict(s) as such.
We will gradually develop an understanding of 'diaspora' that will help us to analyse its possible positive and/or negative roles in conflict resolution. It will also be interesting to hear from affected fellow peacemakers what their experiences as part of a diaspora are.
As always, the first workshop in the series will focus mainly on general questions regarding diasporas. The Chat Workshop on Sunday, 27 June, is called 'Introducing Diaspora and Conflict' . The leading questions are:
What is a diaspora?
In what ways do conflicts affect diasporas?
What diaspora groups exist in the Middle East?
If applicable, how would you describe your life in the diaspora? What role does your national/ethnic identity play in the diaspora?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note that the event will start on Sunday, 27 June at 20.00 Jerusalem time.
If you have any questions regarding the event, please don't hesitate us to contact us at mepeace.dialogue@gmail.com.
We look forward to your participation!
