An invite to a Peace Café دعوة إلى السلام كافي

Hello, you are invited to join a group of Israelis, Palestinians and others to a social gathering next month for dialogue based on mutual respect and understanding. The meeting is organized by a group of people who’ve met on the website mepeace.org. This website serves as a platform for peacemakers in the Middle East.

The Israelis and Palestinians of mepeace.org, with the help of their friends from outside the region, have achieved much in the website’s short life. People have become friends, despite the difference between them, and small projects have been set up by mepeace.org members to help children from both sides of the conflict. But despite all the wonderful options technology can offer us, we have recognized the fact that there is no real substitute to meeting face to face. This is why we have arranged what we call a Peace Café.

Our meeting is planned for August 22nd (Friday), at 10:00 in the Evangelical Lutheran College “Talitha Kumi” in Beit Jalla (a ten minute drive from Jerusalem). You can see the meeting place here: http://www.talithakumi.org/IndexE.html. We made substantial efforts to find a place that is accessible for both Palestinians and Israelis. The school has wireless internet access, which we plan to use in order to communicate via video chat with our friends who can’t attend. The meeting will last a few hours and we will be asking people to pay 40 shekels to cover the cost of refreshment, filming of the event and the use of the building.

If you are interested in finding out more you can log onto our website http://www.mepeace.org/ . You do not have to join the website, you can just read about the meeting we are planning. We only have a limited number of spaces so if you would like to book a place then please contact:

Noa D (Israel)
Hiba (Palestine)
Max S (UK)
peace.cafe2@gmail.com

We will respond to any enquires and would warmly welcome any ideas or suggestions that you have that may help make the occasion all the more worth while. We are looking forward to meeting more like-minded people interested in seeing and knowing the faces and people behind the big word “conflict”. So please do join us and we would be very grateful if you could pass this message on to whoever you think may be interested.

Thank you.

Noa D (Israel)
Hiba (Palestine)
Max S (UK)
peace.cafe2@gmail.com

The World Café

The World Cafe refers to both a vision and a method of dialogue.
It evolved out of conversations and experimentation one day
at the home of consultants Juanita Brown and David Isaacs.

World Café Conversations are an intentional way to create a living network of conversation around questions that matter. A Café Conversation is a creative process for leading collaborative dialogue, sharing knowledge and creating possibilities for action in groups of all sizes.

The challenges of life in the 21st Century require us to find new ways to access the wisdom and intelligence inherent in groups both small and large. The need for collaboration, insight and coordinated action has never been greater. Café Conversations are one way that communities, businesses, governments, and people from all walks of life are using to create a common purpose, share knowledge, make more intelligent decisions, and call forth life-affirming action together.

The methodology of the World Café is simple: The environment is set up like a café, with tables for four, tablecloths covered by paper tablecloths, flowers, some colored pens and, if possible, candles, quiet music and refreshments. People sit four to a table and have a series of conversational rounds lasting from 20 to 45 minutes about one or more questions which are personally meaningful to them. At the end of each round, one person remains at each table as the host, while each of the other three travel to separate tables. Table hosts welcome newcomers to their tables and share the essence of that table's conversation so far. The newcomers relate any conversational threads which they are carrying -- and then the conversation continues, deepening as the round progresses. At the end of the second round, participants return to their original table -- or move on to other tables for one or more additional rounds -- depending on the design of the Café. In subsequent rounds they may explore a new question or go deeper into the original one. After three or more rounds, the whole group gathers to share and explore emerging themes, insights, and learnings, which are captured on flipcharts or other means for making the collective intelligence of the whole group visible to everyone so they can reflect on what is emerging in the room. At this point the Café may end or it may begin further rounds of conversational exploration and inquiry.

In World Café, the formulation of powerful questions is a fundamental art and skill. Questions like "What's important to you about this situation, and why do you care?" and "What are we not seeing (or talking about) that is vital to our progress?" can open up new possibilities and energy. If you (as planner or host) don't know what question(s) are right for a particular Café, you can ask as a first round question "What question, if answered, could make the greatest difference to the future of the situation we're exploring here?"

The seven design principles of World Café are:
Set the context
Create hospitable space
Explore questions that matter
Encourage everyone's contribution
Cross-pollinate and connect diverse perspectives
Listen together for patterns, insights, and deeper questions
Harvest and share collective discoveries

This is a very sensible 5-point approach, Amal.
Very sensible.
Good and necessary ideas.

Please join and contribute to the mePEACEplan group here. That group is at http://www.mepeace.org/group/mepeaceplanhttp://www.mepeace.org/grou....
Jafra has also tabled and started to canvass some similar ideas there.

Also a fine idea.
What does everyone else think about media coverage?
if you can help with media coverage contact the Peace Café organizers it might be that you can contribute peace.cafe2@gmail.com. I know they plan to video the event.
How about IBA TV?
It can be good but we must make sure that these events are fruitful the media is full with activities people run to push and get media without delivering value in the events.
I will be there. Looking forward
