Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's party wants to ban Israeli Arabs from marking the anniversary of what they term "the Catastrophe" or Nakba, when in 1948 some 700,000 Arabs lost their homes in the war that led to the establishment of the state of Israel.

The ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party said it would propose legislation next week for a ban on the practice and a jail term of up to three years for violators.

"The draft law is intended to strengthen unity in the state of Israel and to ban marking Independence Day as a day of mourning," said party spokesman Tal Nahum.

The initiative could fuel racial tensions stoked by Lieberman's February election campaign call to make voting or the holding of public office in Israel contingent on pledging loyalty to the Jewish state.

Arabs, who make up 20 percent of Israel's population, said the allegiance demand was aimed at them and accused Lieberman of racism.

Israel celebrated its Independence Day this year on April 29, in accordance with the Hebrew lunar calendar. Palestinian refugees around the world and Israel's Arab citizens mark the Nakba on May 15, the day after the British mandate over Palestine ended in 1948.

Ceremonies in the West Bank were held a day early this year because May 15 falls on Friday, the Muslim day of rest.

In Ramallah, hundreds of Palestinians, some holding large wooden keys to symbolize the keys of homes from which they fled in 1948, took part in a rally.

"I came here to show that we believe that one day we will return. If not me, then my son," said Mohammad Hassan, 79.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, on a visit to Syria, was to make a televised address later in the day to mark the Nakba.

The right-leaning government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which Lieberman's party is a key ally, has not endorsed the Western and Arab-backed goal of Palestinian statehood.

It also firmly opposes the division of Jerusalem and the right of return of Palestinian refugees, and Netanyahu recently introduced a demand that Palestinians, as part of any future peace agreement, recognize Israel as a "Jewish state".

Two very interesting peacemakers in Luc and Sami. One thinks in that old antisemitic jargon and calls us dirty , corrupt and crime riddled zionists. Where did I hear that before? And who are these modern zionists in his mind if not the Jews of yesteryear. He is not even prepared to hide behind the "salami tactics" of his leaders and is demanding that we hand back the villages and land you stole.

Wow must be modern peacemaking rules and jargon.

The other tells us that we are promoting holocaust! and
I really need a cool brainwash out of my chilling hot thoughts to forget Ashdod!!! but how?

Again Israel belongs to the Arabs and we will be getting a holocaust unless we accede to their demands.

I presume that both these peacemakers wants us to tremble before their mighty rhetoric and threats of annihilation unless we surrender.

Someone must have forgotten to tell the two that Israel is in possession and no longer in a mood to kneel before their demands. We are a strong nation with a strong IDF and only negotiations and give and take will bring peace and allow you to form a state and not terror or threats.

They want to commemorate,let them have a separate memorila day that is other than Israel independence day and i will gladly lobby for such a day. They can also visit the graves of the fallen on that particular day.

Sami, think of it this way. It is a time someone picked to grieve. Don't give rite to the anger and hate. Walk away and grieve. You don't need a signed date to acknowledge this time. Allow for healing that is the purpose of grief. Look to the light of God In'Sha'Allah. as all good things are great. follow the word.

Igor: Can you tell us where you come from and why you think someone like you deserves to come live on stolen lands here and demand that we don't even mourn our losses? If your answer is because you are Jewish, that is not sufficient. Do you have a deed from a distant ancestor to a piece of land here? Can we test your genetic background to see if really your family is even distantly related to say Arab Jews (Sephardis). If we find your genetic background to be European (I am a geneticist) from say the old Khazaria, can we ask you to clear out?

I as a Palestinian welcome Jews of any background (whether European or others) to live with us as Equal (even though I don't have to per International law). But not as overlords or usurpers who demand the victim just shut up and accept their fate. Just like we welcomed Armenians after their holocaust, we can still welcoem you but not with a racist attitude.

Just like I predicted in 2009 that Law was passed in a modified version.Its a done deal and like it or not it is the LAW of the land. What makes you think that I am bitter. Exposing pure unadulterated evil is not bitterness. Israel is thriving in its economy and military: what is there to be bitter about.

I may be upset that history is being turned on its head: but I have learned live with it and now it is a source of my daily humour.

Sorry Igor, I should not have used the word dirty. But I do stand behind the rest, and, in fact, I was simply quoting, admittedly from memory, words attributed to Michael Oren by Haaretz. But now I can't find the link.

I can promise you I am not anti-semitic. But I am fiercely critical of Israel for it's treatment of Palestinians, and I make no apology for that.

HYaari, are you Sephardic? If not, then we are pretty much on the same page as far as being an "alien."

Have you read Shlomo Sand's book? Or is he, like Pappe, now regarded as a SHIT : Self Hating or Israel Threatening (Jew)

I know I will can kicked off this site for thanking Eyal for spawning another anti Jew, anti Israeli hate site. But this is what it has become. There is nothing about peace here. Just death and murder of Israelis is condoned and while Palestinian so called suffering is elevated to sainthood and martyrdom and condemned.
