Vision of mepeace.org - network for peace

mepeace.org is a network for peace and platform for peacemakers. The online network is home to thousands of peacemakers and millions of page visits from more than 100 countries. The aims of mepeace.org:

Exemplify and realize peace and co-existence online and on the ground
Empower individuals and organizations with interaction, information and inspiration
Leverage the web and networking technologies to mobilize a movement for Middle East peace

Transformation

We are transforming mepeace.org into a platform and movement that will benefit from the collective wisdom and cooperation of its activists. It is possible for mepeace.org’s leaders to build a movement for peace. As it stands, only a few shoulder the responsibilities for mepeace.org. This transformation will empower more leaders to build teams and lead a movement for Middle East peace. The proposed leadership structure:

How it will work – MEPEACE will support leaders and teams in four areas of responsibility (circles): Interact, Inform, Inspire, Sustain – each with five teams and corresponding leaders. Teams encourage cooperation, share the work and accomplish more. Teams exemplify co-existence, offer experience and empower leaders from the bottom-up. This team model will encourage motivated peacemakers to take and share responsibilities.

Communication – it is vitally important for us to communicate clearly and consistently with each other.

Team leaders – each will build team of 4-5 individuals to advance work with weekly communication
Steering Committee - made of Team Leaders. The SC will make decisions by monthly communication
The WIP - consists of Circle Leaders representing the world, Israel and Palestine - will communicate weekly and create an agenda for the Steering Committee
The board and international board will be engaged to support the WIP and Steering Committee.
The boards will be updated monthly and meet quarterly
Community – peacemakers will receive a monthly update in addition to twice-weekly communication

Our request of you

We ask you to take responsibility for one of the teams below and to communicate your choice with Oliver and Eyal who will support you and your team. Reach us via email at volunteer@mepeace.org.

INTERACT: Administrate, Dialogue, Volunteers, Moderation, Technology

INFORM: Multimedia, Calendars, Links, Resources, Information

INSPIRE: Facebook, Arabic, Events, Media, Special Projects

SUSTAIN: Organization, Strategy, Funding, Leadership, Resources

Responsibilities – Team leaders will:

Create a one-page document for teamwork (vision, objectives, responsibilities, schedule)
Choose an effective method and schedule for weekly communication (Skype, meeting, phone)
Manage and document the work of the team (to present monthly to WIP for evaluation)

Transparency – Communicate openly w leaders and peacemakers
Respect – Honor peacemakers, the community and the work of peacemaking
Unity – Work together for peace
Support – Help our leaders, peacemakers and the community
Teams – Empower leaders to lead

MEpeace Volunteer Meeting

Clara Singer will lead the area ‘inform,’ including documentation, calendar maintenance, resources provision, and other forms of information. Once Oliver and Clara discuss, the ball will start rolling. Clara will Matt Gordner and Narda Azaria Dalgeish about assisting in this area.

Matt and Eyal Raviv will be meeting to discuss sustain and will report back.

Eyal volunteered to help with the ‘Links team’. Clara invites all to assist once she meets with Oliver. Clara has set up a googlegroups site for ‘inform’ so anyone interested is invited to email her (huronline@gmail.com).

Those who take responsibility in one of these teams are automatically part of the Steering Committee.

Waleed Hammad (waleedpeace@gmail) is leading ‘inspire,’ including Facebook, languages, events, media, and special projects. Basil Keilani will offer assistance and counsel where and when possible.

As a general point, ‘inspire’ needs to be developed in order to cultivate a stronger community of volunteers. In particular, the facebook and Arabic areas should be given primacy. With more volunteers MEpeace will be able to develop full teams (4 or 5 people) who can then begin the transformation.

Events, media, and special events are things that follow from facebook and language appeal.

Oliver will first talk to Clara, and then Waleed. Oliver and Waleed will talk Monday the 28th of June at 20:00 Hebron time.

A concern was raised regarding the overlap of areas and how it will be possible to collaborate on projects that crisscross. But when all areas and teams are manned it shouldn’t be a problem to open lines of communication between the areas. The divide is meant to divvy out responsibilities, so flexibility will be a must to some extent, yet majority responsibility will fall on the Steering Committee to decide and allocate responsibility in addition to Sunday meetings.

Narine Melikyan has volunteered to support multimedia and promotion.

All areas will have support from the Volunteer Coordinator, Oliver and Eyal.

Inform: Eyal suggests that working on documentation as a first step, but he defers to Clara for oversight and trusts her vision.

Book recommendations need to go in the ‘Links’ page.

Summary: ‘inspire’ and ‘inform’ will be the first areas to be developed.

Transformation of mepeace is a great project that requires hard work from the leaders and their assistants. I think it is the right way to activate the members and make them feel that they achieve something for peace in the Middle East. It is a matter of commitment and real intention to volunteer for mepeace so the leaders have to choose their assistants or team members according to their knowledge about them and their skills.
