I think that Zionism is a form of nationalism. Nationalism being the idea that you are superior to others because of where you were born.

The story behind why Zionism exists is very interesting. The expulsion of Jews in late 13th century England, The Spanish Inquisition, pogroms in Russia and then Hitler - it is easy to see why Zionism developed as a force of resistance to anti-Semitism dealt out by Western Christendom.
I hope not to offend anyone with my views - just giving my honest opinion.

Zionism is an element in the European national awakening of the 17th century.
Parallel to the enlightenment there was a shift in Europe in thinking of the function of the state.
while the European went through their development, industrial revolution they reformed the idea of state and bring new idea of national state. The french were leaders, in their French revolution and the Napolion effort to unite Europe.
The jewish people were special case, while some of them recognize themselves as nationalistic with the nation they born in, some jews developed special appeal for territory - this is the core for the development of Zionism.
Zionist are group within the Jewish people who wanted to create a National Jewish state for Jews. Israel is that state and in that the Zionists finish the 1st stage of their initiatives.
Today we experience new thinking of the rule of Judaism and have 21st century world where we are all connected. this is time for change for the Zionists and now there new developments where people see themselves in trans-national ideas. we are citizens of the world and not nationalists while we recognize where we come from, we push for human bond grater then the borders of the state. (As we see now in response to Haiti)
now we experience parallel of this trans-Zionist development a reaction of the "old Zionists" so some people think that the Zionist have more to do as nationalistic. same as the reaction the French did.
it is interesting to note that for the Palestinians we can expect National movement as it is important for them to develop a state, as the Zionists did. when you look at it as "human development" you can recognize that the national phase is impotent and now is the time for the Palestinians to move into the nation state. in some sense this is "trans-Zionists" idea to include the future of the Palestinians in what we are responsible for, and try to support the Palestinian development as brothers instead as enemies.

There are many ideas of and about Zionism. We need a brief working definition of Zionism. That definition must be brief and include the various (perceived) forms. Here is my current version:
Zionism is the national self-determination aspiration of the Jewish People. This aspiration has always been inherent in the daily lives of Jews.
The idea of Zion has been central in Jewish history, thought and culture for well over 3000 years. During all that time, Jews have identified and have been consistently identified by others as a People of unique and common heritage and culture. Jews had and have an ongoing presence in and are linked indissolubly to the Holy Land which for Jews was and is Eretz Yisrael, the traditional Land of Israel with Jerusalem as its capital.

The first paragraph of the definition above stands alone and in my view is the essence of the essence. The second paragraph provides some explanation and historical and cultural context, and together with the first paragraph is the essence of Zionism.
The word Zionism is relatively new, but the concept is not. Jerusalem (and thus the concept of Zion) have been a fundamental aspect of the culture of the Jewish People (you and my people) for at least 2000 years and probably at least 3000 years. The Jewish Faith (religion) is simply one aspect of the complex and documented culture and traditions of the Jewish People. That pluralistic culture has continued to evolve continuously for at least 2000 years and probably at least 3000 years, and continues to evolve today.

for me zionism is a very personal thing.
I had the "pleasure" to live all over the world and the idea that the world today is a global community for me is absolutely false.
zionism for me is to have place where I can be my self, not a minority, a place were I could speak hebrew, celebrate my culture and be proud of what I am.
and that is why I conceder my self a zionist . but may be if Zionism is the problem I could be something else and still keep all the things that are important to me ?

what do you say about the social democratic zionist parties in Israel like meretz?
what do you say about Noam chomsky that used to arange zionist rallies around the world. but was and still one of Israel's biggest critic ... yet he describe himself as a zionist.
I am not here to defend zionism, I am here to defend the basic things that are important to me that I mentioned above in my other comment these are very personal things .
for example if I was me living in holland next to you I would probably feel very uncomfterbale to say the least . its not that I think that you are a bad person I just think that you believe in what you write , and that you never been introduced to my culture.

Erich Fried's poem that you posted starts with a question "what do you actually want?"
I answered that question in a comment above ... I will post it again :"what I want is to have place where I can be my self, not a minority, a place were I could speak hebrew, celebrate my culture and be proud of what I am."
I absolutely do not want any of the things that poem is saying that I want . infect if you knew me better I am huge supporter of a valid Palestinian state and the two state solution . to me that the best solution to keep the things that are important to me yet not take these things from the palestinians .
