Crossing Qalandiya is a series of letters between two women, Daniela and Shireen. They live less than 100km apart, but could never visit one another at home - so instead they write letters. In these letters they discuss family, childcare, recipes, the local beaches … war and ethnic hatred. Daniela is Israeli and Shireen Palestinian. Their exchange is fraught with challenge, but also a sincere desire on each side to understand the thinking and grievances of the other.
This is a moving and illuminating exchange of ideas – at once accessible and profound, personal and political - and a beacon of hope in the wilderness of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.Interests:When Shireen and Daniela met in Geneva in spring 2008, they knew very little about each other's daily lives and about each other peoples. Most of their information and misconceptions came from the societies around them, the media and the myths they each grew up with about the other side - the one they've always known as 'the enemy'.
After the initial suspicion has subsided, they started learning more about each other's history and culture, and discovered an amazing thing: they are very similar; they have many things in common.
In an exchange of letters they discuss their findings, and the process that brought them closer. They believe that if their peoples knew each other a little better, much of the existing gap in perception would be breeched.
Why I want peace:
"Love Thy Neighbor"
Interests and activities:
Crossing Qalandiya encourages Israelis, Palestinians and others to join this odyssey of mutual discovery. And when the two peoples get to know each other better, the walls of suspicion, fear and concrete will fall. Please join this journey, of getting to know 'the other'. We might not always agree, but we can discuss. And we can certainly live together, help end the occupation and be good neighbors.
Something you didn't know about me:
Meeting and befriending each other changed our lives, and the way we see the situation in our homeland!

The symbol of peace falls in the land of peace
Will we give them the chance to bring down the symbol of peace in the land of peace?
Many people know this is a plot of land full of olive trees.
And many Israeli and Palestinian families make a living from these trees
Especially that so many Palestinian families do not have another source of living,
except these olive trees
Days before the start of the harvest, especially in the West Bank,
What happened was expected, the start was of some settlers groups fighting Palestinian families
and preventing them to enter to the olive harvest,
Then the settlers started shooting the Palestinians, and set fire in the trees
Finally, with the help of European, American, Israeli, and other people from all over the world,
Some Palestinian families succeeded to collect their olives.
So, I am the address to thank all those who helped these families and brought them happiness,
And say to the settlers: We will not let you bring down the symbol of peace
For the olive trees are the symbol of peace in the land of peace
Great to meet you, Fesal. Your story reflects the harsh reality we live in. You are a great man to have gone through all this and come out on the winning side - the side that understands that we are all brothers and sisters, we should all fight side by side - for peace. Proud to be your friends.
A True Story By Faisal Al-kateep
I am a Palestinian Arab from Hizmeh, a village between Jerusalem and Ramallah. When I was 15 years old I fought against the Israeli Occupation in search of freedom. At that time I thought every Jewish person, whether soldier or citizen, man or woman, young or old, should be killed. I rejected the right for any Jew to live and every Jew was a target. I was just a kid, believe me, and I didn’t understand anything about politics or the Arab-Israeli conflict. I was arrested and sat in jail for 12 years. This was during the first intifada from 1987. At that time nobody talked about peace but only of violence. I matured during my time in jail. I started studying and reading books on politics, literature, poetry, and about the Madrid Conference.
It gave me hope to live in peace and dignity. I learned that violence only breeds violence and that peace is the only solution for the two nations, the only way for both to have a respectful and beautiful future. We live on the same land. We are neighbors. We drink the same water and both pray to a monotheistic God. We must live in peace on the basis of religion for God and land for everyone.
