Tim Upham said… The United Nations agencies I was involved with was the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It was dealing with the livelihoods of people, and how that connects with sustaining wildlife. The big problem they have in West Africa, is that people depend very much on bush meat. That is what led to the extinction of the Miss Waldrous Red Colobus Monkey. When I went through the markets of Accra, I saw a lot of monkeys hunted in the wild, which people took home to cook. I am encouraged by the conservation work of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, it goes along well with her Nobel Peace Prize. Which is one of the problems facing West Africa, a lot of these countries had serious problems with insurrection and rebellion. So peace is not just essential for the people living there, but also for the wildlife too. It is now trying to get West Africans on alternative sources of protein, as oppose to bush meat. Meda w' ase.
Tim Upham said… I have been to Ghana, but now I live in the United States. When I was in Ghana, I wrote about the wildlife there, and Kakum and Mole National Parks. I have been very much involved with conservation issues in West Africa -- Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
