Profile Information

My personal story:
I grew up in a Church of Ireland home.I went to boarding school from the age of 7; then to Art College; followed by working+traveling in Copenhagen + Paris; did over 50 different kinds of jobs 'till my early 30s[we can't all be the potatoes in the soup!]from acting to selling door to door.I am a well travelled photographer+art teacher. I have had the good fortune to photograph Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandella, Pelé, HRH Prince Charles also Rene Zelwegger, Peter Sellers Bono + I work a lot with Damien Rice Band. Since 1983 I have been practicing Nichiren Buddhism + a member of SGI [International Society for the Creation of Value] an NGO for Peace through Culture+Education.
Why I want peace:
The purpose of life is happiness; this has to come from within therefore from an inner spiritual revolution or transformation, we call it Human Revolution - I raise my life condition + my enviroment + society change accordingly. I have experienced hypocracy, betrayal + trauma; inate within all human beings is courage, wisdom + compassion - this potential is within all of us. All life is connected + where there is strife is the weak point in our global village. I believe in courageous communication for a better world.
Interests and activities:
Photography, Art, Travel, Poetry - Khalil Gibran Pablo Neruda; Good books - John McGahern, Culture in its true sense, Education - Makaguchi; People, Food especially Asian; Music - Brazilian, Turkish, Emilianna Torinni, Ray Lamontaine. Collecting + selling artifacts.
Something you didn't know about me:
I am looking for a good woman!
Favorite website:
http://www.thework.com/downloads/littlebook/Arabic_LB.pdf
How I found mepeace.org:
Through a musical Jewish/Buddhist friend + peace activist.
What I want to achieve here:
Make friends; share stories; encourage the best in each other regardless of race , religion or background.

HOPE - a poem.

HOPE

[so far yet so near]

Hope my foundation stone,

a breeze of emerald light;

warm glistening of rustling branches,

leaving no fear in the shadows.

With a singing heart,
regrets do not engulf me

and makes hope my true land,
as celestial clouds revive my happiest memories of azure blue
and the smell of fresh cut grass.

Propellored 'planes on friendly journeys traverse the sky;

I think of voyages I've yet to…

A True Story By Faisal Al-kateep
I am a Palestinian Arab from Hizmeh, a village between Jerusalem and Ramallah. When I was 15 years old I fought against the Israeli Occupation in search of freedom. At that time I thought every Jewish person, whether soldier or citizen, man or woman, young or old, should be killed. I rejected the right for any Jew to live and every Jew was a target. I was just a kid, believe me, and I didn’t understand anything about politics or the Arab-Israeli conflict. I was arrested and sat in jail for 12 years. This was during the first intifada from 1987. At that time nobody talked about peace but only of violence. I matured during my time in jail. I started studying and reading books on politics, literature, poetry, and about the Madrid Conference.

It gave me hope to live in peace and dignity. I learned that violence only breeds violence and that peace is the only solution for the two nations, the only way for both to have a respectful and beautiful future. We live on the same land. We are neighbors. We drink the same water and both pray to a monotheistic God. We must live in peace on the basis of religion for God and land for everyone.

Hey Bro, looks like we have a bit in common, except that after many relationships I'm taking a well-deserved sabbatical and concentrating on my photography and painting these days, taking Eudora Welty's advise when she warns that "families are the death of art". She is of course talking about the enormous energy and time it takes to maintain a partnership.

I'm somewhat into Buddhism especially the paintings, but am too undisciplined to practice. I just try not to do too much damage and maintain as small a footprint on the planet as I can manage as far as useless detritus.

This web site is a good opportunity for artists to share their vision and hopefully point the way toward alternative ways of thinking and seeing a way out of this ugly forest of seemingly endless fear, suspicision and hatred.

If you want you can join me and some pals on facebook and we can carry on over there as well.

Regards, Joel

Oh I also art direct and design a cool magazine

www.itsallinthejourney.com

trying to give back a bit after a long career as a graphic designer
