War without political horizon is futile - By Daoud Kuttab

Once again we are witnessing a sharp escalation of violence without any pretense of looking for a political horizon. Israel is shelling Gaza from land, sea and air without even thinking about a political perspective.

Pundits and activists will argue over who is to blame for the current round of violence and what are the goals of the Israeli offensive, but in all the tough talk, no one is even considering to look further than the military…

Sheikhs and rabbis in pursuit of peace – on Mount of Olives

As the setting sun casts a reverential red glow over Jerusalem’s Old City, a small group of sheikhs and rabbis stand aloft on the Mount of Olives, overlooking the holy sites, joined in prayer. Their prayer is also joined up, an amalgam of recitations from Islam and Judaism, as if by fusing the powers of these two religions, the men can focus on their single cause: peace between the populations of the holy land.

These spiritual leaders have given their blessings to a new organisation, one… Continue

What the Gaza war meant for Israel

By Orly Halpern

Omri Buson says his "blood boils" every time he hears about the negotiations between Hamas and Israel over the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

From his point of view, Israel should have never ended last year's military offensive on Gaza without Shalit's return.

"We needed to hurt them and not have mercy ... to destroy every house till [we] found that soldier," says Buson, who dropped out of law school to… Continue

Another Israeli wall to protect 'Jewish character'

Israel has approved plans for construction of a barrier along the border with Egypt, a move that clearly indicates that it wants to remain a religious apartheid regime.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the decision was taken to secure Israel's “Jewish character”, BBC reported on Monday.

The new barrier will be built along two parts of the border —near the Red Sea city of Eilat and on the edge of the Gaza Strip.

The project is set to cost $270 million… Continue
