I one time saw a musical performance by a troupe of young men out of Rwanda. They were rescued as orphans during the Rwandan genocide, and they grew up in an American orphanage, and spoke English quite well. We had a chance to speak with them individually after the performance. There was one young man, who was either 19 or 20. Which means he would have been about 8 during the Rwandan genocide. When I asked him was he Hutu or Tutsi, I was shocked to see the horror come over his face, when I asked him. Then I had to stop and think, that he was a child when this happened, and he remembers that if it was revealed what he was, it meant that he would die. It made me think about my mother, I did not know that she was the sole survivor of her family, until after she died. Sometimes, when we think about genocide, we see it flat on a piece of paper, and do not think about the psychology of genocide. That is what we must all think about, is the psychology of human rights abuse.
