Oliver--I won't be able to take part in the Apr. 11 chat on language, but I'd like to raise one issue that perhaps somebody can take up--language on the internet. On the internet, eye contact, body language, voice volume, and intonation are missing, and communication is much impoverished. Misunderstandings can and do arise under such circumstances. What techniques can we use as internet communicators to make sure we present our views and arguments as constructively and clearly as possible? How can we develop a better metalanguage that is more expressive and easier to use than the standar set of icons?
