Palestine in Israeli School Books: Nurit Peled-Elhanan

Alternate Focus interviews Nurit Peled-Elhanan, author of the forthcoming book Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education. Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service. She analyzes the presentation of images, maps, layouts and use of language in History, Geography and Civic Studies textbooks, and reveals how the books might be seen to marginalize Palestinians, legitimize Israeli military action and reinforce Jewish-Israeli territorial identity.

It is not the textbooks in Gaza, but the state-controlled television there.  That is what is offering the hateful material.  The only thing the textbooks show, is all of Israel as Palestine.  This seems ironic, when Hamas says it recognizes the pre-1967 borders.  The borders with who?

Palestinians have only recently acquired their own text books. The books you Ghazi, refer to are either Jordanian or Egyptian, which was all the Palestinians could afford.

It is NOT possible to mistake Egyptian and Jordanian text books for Palestinian books.  Whoever said the Palestinian textbooks contained racist material was deliberately spreading propaganda, as are you, if you continue with this lie.

Incidentally, the Israeli textbooks of course eulogize the Israeli military, one which has fought, suffered and saved the nation from the twisted designs of Arab force.

Please have Nurit review the image of Jews as posited in the schoolbooks of Palestinian Arab children in both the Westbank and Gaza as well as in the Muslim countries of the Mideast.  Nurit only has to review these images by checking Palestinian Media Watch.  The image of Jews is one of absolute hatred, sickening and defiling.  Also, in which schoolbook is Israel actually entered as its own country?  I didn't think so.  The problem with these altogether liberal left correct perspectives is that Israel is always labelled and despised whereas little or no criticism is made of the Palestinian element.  Feel good, Nurit?

Great post Narine!

Nurit is doing such important work in helping change the psycholgy of a nation.  Every state needs to go through this process.  The pivotal moment in Australian educational history for me was when teachers could talk about invasion instead of (or along with) the term settlement.  This occurred in 1988 which commemorated 200 years after invasion began by Europeans of Australia.

On a related note we were fortunate to have Nurit's brother Miko Peled come to Australia.  His new book the General's Son I am sure will be an important contribution to presenting a different view of the Palestinian-Israeli story.
