There is no denying that Edmond James de Rothschild played a very significant role in the development of the early Zionist movement. He went in and purchased 125, 000 acres of land, and contributed $50 million dollars for the building of settlements and generating electricity for them. But you have to realize that he is a product of post-Dreyfus France, when at that trial Theodore Herzl said we cannot stay in Europe anymore, we must have our own country. This was the results of deeply entrenched Anti-Semitism that existed in Europe, before World War II. But be careful, the Zionist movement did not come just at of Europe before World War II. In Tel-Aviv, you have the Yemenite Torture, which was settled Yemenite Jews during the 1880s. They were escaping Yemen, then a part of the Ottoman Empire, to get away from Turkish soldiers that were terrorizing them for wine. So they left one part of the Ottoman Empire to settle in another.
