PHONE 4 PEACE: A ‘PEACEATHON’ – 24 HOURS OF COMPELLING CONVERSATION
I am sending you this because you have been connected with me in some ways over the last ten years (friend, colleague, client, study peer organisation).
As I approach my 60th birthday I am in an exciting period, involving establishing a new entity ‘Women of Wit, Wisdom & Wonder’ - celebrating the inspirational contributions of women and the voice of the feminine throughout the world within women and men.
Women are so often the victims of war and violence – 80% of the world’s displaced people are women and girls. So, as a contribution to the UN International Day of Peace/ Peace One Day work (www.peaceoneday.org), I’m hosting
‘A Call for Peace: 24 hours of Compelling Conversation’
21st September - UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 21/09/2010
12 noon 21st September to 12 noon 22nd September
This is a day when, wherever and however we live the world – individuals, groups, communities, governments... bring a focus and action on PEACE. The day was the inspiration of one man, Jeremy Gilley. His tireless passion for building a world where Peace is a real experience for all led him to the UN and the commitment of all Governments there to this annual event. This day saves and transforms lives.
I live in a tiny rural community in Northumberland, which made International Headlines through the actions of a man called Raoul Moat. Peace can seem a nebulous concept - and the disturbances of this time revealed a raw aspect of life that is the daily life of many in our world. With this glimpse into the antithesis of Peace I am stimulated even more in my questioning of ‘what is peace for me as an individual; what is peace for you, for our families and communities?’ And how do we consciously nurture peace, in ourselves and in our children – for the sake of their future?
Last year, I held a series of events and conversations around the film of the Liberian Peace Women – Pray the Devil Back to Hell; the documentary of how a small group of women changed the face of a country – entirely through peaceful means.
This year’s event is a Peaceathon* – 24hours of telephone conversation on Peace: (24 single hours), each with a host, holding a conversation, sharing and exploring what peace means for us; when, where, how we experience peace, what we seek, the challenges we face. Hosts and participants will ring in from all over the world.
For me Peace is organic, it is something we need actively to nurture, develop and care for. Peace has a close friend – Passion. In all Peace movements I notice they originate when someone makes a passionate stand FOR something; for a safe world for their children; for their families; for building on what matters; for creating ‘something else’…
