New Permaculture and Arabic Language Studies Program begins this summer!

Permaculture and Sustainability Center for Arid Climate

Our program aims to increase environmental awareness and sustainability to people from all walks of life. Although our center is located at the heart of a local Bedouin community, it aspires to embrace other communities from Israel and around the world.
Bedouins have been practicing self-sufficiency in the harsh desert for centuries. Despite the rapid change of lifestyle, living in harmony with the surrounding environment is at the heart of their culture. Quasir-A-Sir, a Bedouin village of 3,500 residents, located in the Negev desert of Israel, is currently undergoing development.
Together with Bustan, the community is currently erecting an eco-village. Alongside Bustan's work with the community Bustan runs courses in sustainability and permaculture design, both of which are inspired by the Bedouin's way of life in the desert. Our course takes place at the Khan in Quasir-A-Sir, offering participants the opportunity of implementing their gained knowledge in the field by working with the local Bedouin community building and developing their village. Working with the residents using permaculture design and sustainable approaches offers unique hands-on experience in modern real-life as well as ancient practices.
Program Consists of:
5 month Permaculture Design Course
*Arabic language and Middle Eastern Studies
*Permaculture Design (73 hour PDC) subject material
*Hands-on work in the fields of permaculture(sustainable agriculture, greywater systems, composting, rainwater harvesting, natural building)
*Workshops-livestock, medicinal herbs, soap-making, basket weaving, canning/brining/pickling, tapestry weaving, tent-making, and other wildcrafting skills
*Olive harvest (from tree to oil, experience the whole process and make the oil you cook with for the entire course)
*Tour of ecological, sustainable, and permaculture related locations around Israel
