THE PEACE CALL

The premise behind this is to use the technology which is freely available to us to mobilize people in talking to one another. Using Skype one can talk realtime for free in a conference style meeting which gives us the opportunity to transcend the pages, borders even continents and truly get to know one another.

This can be used for all manner of purposes, some are suggested below....

1) to try and involve the "silent majority" on this page - a way to get people feeling included and involved in a progressive process.

2) to give you the opportunity to bring in speakers, so a number of members can listen to and question the person.

3) to help in the organisation of other projects - hold a real time planning meeting.

4) to reach out beyond these pages and involve "peacemakers" from other organisations - the eventual idea would be for the call to spread, so maybe the original call involved 9 people. These 9 would then split and try and find members for their own call, who in turn would split and find more people and so on....

In this way the idea could spread and reach many people...not just relating to this project but globally.

I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts regarding this and how it could be implemented by people on this site....

Hi friends,

Very interesting things to do with skype according to some friends of mine. Personally I never use it.
So Roni, we must try one day... :)

Just so you're aware, Catherine's comments made me check the system requirements and it states i>i>"Broadband is best", but doesn't exclude dial-up, so there's hope for you yet!! If anyone has experience of using
Skype with a slower connection, how much does it effect the call??

Great idea - I am just wondering if we couldn't also start to use the group chat in MEpeace (like me - not everyone has a broadband connection :-(

Yeah...well I have tried something similar via another page where we managed to connect 9 people across 3 continents for a 90 minute discussion...its quite illuminating!!

Anyway, basically all you need to be able to participate is Skype, which is free to download....

SKYPE DOWNLOAD

....a headset with a microphone, so you can hear and talk obviously...and a broadband connection. The calls themselves cost nothing above what you already pay for the internet connection so it is a very cost-effective way to communicate. The system comes with a conference call facility built in although I don't know the maximum number a call can hold....I'll have to check that out.

How it works is that once everyone has Skype and has got a Skype address, you need to organise via these pages:

a) who wishes to participate
b) who is going to host the call
c) when the call is to take place (as obviously everyone who wants to participate has to be online at the same time)

Once you have decided upon this information, the host needs to add each person wishing to be involved as a contact on Skype. At the set time, the host can see who of these is online, and then opens a conference call, calling up each contact in turn. If you wish to take part, you simply answer the call and you become part of the chat...if you don't...just don't answer!!!

In this way you can have realtime discussions with large numbers of people regardless of where thye are in the world, as long as everyones settled on a time to be online.

We have found the best way to get the most out of it is for the host to "lead" the call....thus, in advance thought about discussion topics. There is a bulletin board you can use during calls, so anyone involved can post comments or better still, web links as the discussion goes on....so if you want to bring a certain blog or discussion to peoples attention, you can link them to it then and there and have everyone looking at the same things.

Its really very simple, but could be used in a very productive way.

Hope this helps!!!

I've written a bit of an essay!!

Cheers,

Pete
