Profile Information

My personal story:
I was raised in Denver, Colorado. I grew up in a Jewish family and was exposed to the conflict in Israel and Palestine from an early age. A close family friend was a founder of an organization which brought together Israeli and Palestinian teenage girls to dialogue and meet face to face in the mountains of Colorado. Our family hosted many participants before and after they completed the program; my parents cooked for the camp one summer and I was dragged along too. I was certain that if there was to be a solution to conflict, it is to be found in dialoguing and learning to listen to your enemy.

I began truly studying about Israel and Palestine in my first year at university. My mother is Israeli, and my entire family from her side lives there currently. My family represents a wide spectrum of Israeli society. Some cousins live in the North, surrounded by the call-to-prayer echoing off the neighboring hills and Arab villages. Others live in a Kibbutz in the Negev desert in the south–true pioneers of the Secular Labor Zionist project. My aunt meanwhile, lives in Jerusalem and is a part of the Ultra-Orthodox, Haredi community that rejects the State of Israel, claiming that it is not “Jewish” enough. My grandmother lives in the North where while floating in the Kibbutz pool, you can see the confluence of the Syrian, Lebanese and Israeli borders collide. The total is 19 cousins in my generation alone.

Yet, it wasn't until my first year in University that I learned that the country had only been founded in 1948. From my childhood experiences, it was a place of never-ending summer, ice cream and cousins. Since that class, I’ve studied about Israel and Palestine and in Israel/Palestine on various occasions; I spent two summers there learning Hebrew, and I’m now completing a masters degree in Jerusalem and learning Arabic.

This place is more complicated than meets the eye. I am passionate about learning and understanding the differences that are to be found here. I hope to learn how to share these stories with the international world.
Why I want peace:
I want peace because I believe in the right of every individual to be able to live their life in security and dignity. I believe in the right of every child to a future full of possibilities. I believe in freedom of water, food, growth, movement, and expression.

Without a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Israel and Palestine, these rights cannot be protected and the daily life of people is being overshadowed by the political games that are being played. I want peace so that my friends and my family can live without a constant threat to their existence.
Interests and activities:
Travel, reading, cooking, coffee! Currently studying a Masters degree in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in Jerusalem; volunteering with Hand in Hand schools; volunteering with All for Peace Radio; member of All That's Left Collective.
