Tell Israel's Speaker of the Knesset: Women's rights are everyone's rights!

Hi there, I hope you all are doing well and I wish you all a happy new year!

Here is a new campaign that Meretz USA has just launched. It is on the very important issue of women's rights and the violations to it because of the ultra-orthodox in Israel.

Check out the new campaign and write a letter to the Speaker of the Knesset voicing you protest.

Here is the letter:

Dear Ms. Itzik,

As an American Jew concerned with the welfare of the state of Israel and as a supporter of women's rights and religious pluralism, I am upset by the religious coercion taking hold of Israel - a country founded on democracy and pluralism.

I am very troubled to see the religious practices of the ultra-orthodox in Israel imposed on its other citizens, especially at state-sponsored events. I find it unacceptable to ban women from singing, to force women to sit in the back of the bus, or to impose rules of extreme religious modesty in mixed public spaces.

I implore you to stand up and call for a change in these practices, starting at the institution you lead, the Knesset. If Israel is to be truly democratic, the beliefs of all its citizens must be respected, not just those of its most vocal segment.

After all, Israel was born to be a democracy not a theocracy.

Sincerely,
