35 years since the Yom Kippur War - Reflections

On this day, 35 years ago exactly, the Yom Kippur War broke out.
What have we learned in these 35 years? Have we learned that war doesn't pay? Have we learned that arrogance can brood bad results?

Are we better off than we were 35 years ago? Are we safer? Are we closer to peace?

Dear Eyal and all:

What would have happened had Israel not fought the Yom Kippur War? No war? No israel? Would you now be living in Israel, Eyal? Who would be living in Isreal now? What would have happened to the Jews who lived in Israel at Yom Kippur in 1973? How many more would we all be mourning now?

My knowledge is limited on the Yom Kippur War. (I know more about the 1967 War than this, since this is what has caused a lot of the conflict problems in Israel + Palestine).
Anyways, from what I do know, I heard that this war could have been prevented. Golda Meir (the then Prime MInister) knew that Israel was going to be attacked, but she did not take the threat seriously, no?
