What we have here is a failure to communicate and, to be honest and forthright with the American people. It’s upsetting to think that the President believes that al Qaeda is responsible for the raging sectarian violence nor does he recognize that Americans’ support for the war broke down many, many months ago. We have grown accustomed to his disconnect from reality and yes, we are very concerned about terrorism but, it is his mismanagement of the war and his refusal to work out an end game for our eventual withdrawal that now leaves him isolated from the American people.
The really disturbing thing about the President’s comments is his painting of the war in Iraq. He fails to acknowledge that we are now in the middle of a fight between the Shiite dominated government of Iraq which is at war with many of its own people (not terrorists). The only solution lies with the Iraqi leaders to put aside their sectarian blood feud and make a real attempt to form a united government. That is “their” best chance to stabilize “their” country and allow the United States to withdraw. Time is running out.
