A piece of tragic history: a petition from Ha'aretz newspaper... from 22.9.1967

"Our right to defend ourselves from destruction does not give us the right to oppress others.
Occupation results in foreign ruling.
Foreign ruling results in resistance.
Resistance results in oppression.
Oppression results in terror and counter-terror.
The victims of terror are usually innocent people.
Holding the territories will turn us into a people of murderers and murder victims.
Evacuate the territories immediately."

In response to the comment by Christine Quelch, I'm one of the signers of the petition (which, by the way was paid for my RAKACH - Reshima Kommunistit Hadasha). I live in the US and I'm retired. I am looking to contact Raif Elias, Arieh Bober and Chaim Hanegbi, who were personal friends. My dear friend Dan Omer died many years ago, I believe in Jerusalem. We were all denizens of Cafe Ta'amon.

Neri, we need to try everything, because you cannot be sure what will break the camels' back. Even my crazy, aggressive comments may be useful!

I am sorry to differ, Negotiations do not get us anywhere.

Petitions does not work because it has no power.
Negotiations does not work because it is all about Power and how to maximize each side slice of the land. Negotiations leave the solution in the hands of a small political groups who have responsibility internally to political group hence they create tension.

The main thing we can invest in is "Israeli-Palestinian Peace Brain" Application

We need to recognize ourself of one human tissue and build the stages of development of each side till we can fully share one future as human tissue of the middle east. A lot of culture mix and knowledge mix todo.

It would be interesting to know what happened to the people who signed the petition. Are there any familiar names there?

The sequence in which the results are presented is a good and reasonable way, we are all seeing this by our own eyes and know that it is happening, I always said the oppression will present violent acts and nothing around kindness or tolerance, it is about the right time for both sides to admit the rights of each other and make some real compromises, one of them is ending the occupation.

In theory and with hindsight, much of what the petitioners claim is valid.

The problem:

They urge: Evacuate the territories immediately!

The consequence that may have been better or worse than what there is now.

Also much happened since then that affected the moral and pragmatic equations.

In some sense I see it as a prof that petitions are not enough and since when one side try to force its right enlighten opinion of truth on the other side we end up with 40 years Occupation.

The Israeli Left failed since it was blind to the need and world view of the other side. Due its ignorance it made the condition of a split responsibility and enable the Right to act with no balance. The Israeli politic and legal structure enable this conditions so we have today a country who act from its right wind drive and judge itself from its Left wing world view.

The Fact that the Israeli Left failed does not mean that the Right wind won, as it is not clear that so far the Palestinians failed to deal with Israel mean that Israel won. we are all (left, right,Israelis,Palestinians ....) in one big complex conflict where our emotions are separated from our actions and many innocent people pay the price.
