Listening to Mahmoud Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations today, I am overwhelmed by more than a glimmer of hope because I believe that if we can agree on the goals, we can achieve them together.
Both extend their hands in peace:
Abbas to the Israeli people - "We extend our hands to the Israeli government and the Israeli people for peace-making."
Netanyahu to the Palestinian people - "I extend my hand to the Palestinian people, with whom we seek a just and lasting peace . . .I extend my hand -- the hand of Israel -- in peace."
Both understand that all of our children are depending on us:
Abbas to the Israeli people - "Let us urgently build together a future for our children where they can enjoy freedom, security and prosperity."
Netanyahu to the Palestinian people - "Must this conflict continue for generations, or will we enable our children and our grandchildren to speak in years ahead of how we found a way to end it? That’s what we should aim for, and that’s what I believe we can achieve."
May the united forces of good empower our leaders to achieve these common goals.
