'' MEPEACE leadership " training: Summary

"MEPEACE Leadership" training

First weekend training (28th- 30th January, 2010):

A- On Thursday 28th of January:

1- The training started at 4 p.m when the facilitators greeted the participants _ mepeace members_ in this training. The facilitators started to introduce themselves. Then the trainees introduce themselves briefly.

2- One of the facilitators described "Kumi Project" and talked about the procedure to follow in this training.

3- One of the facilitators presented a question:

How can mepeace become a borderless community of individuals and organizations working effectively to achieve peace and social justice?

The facilitator divided the trainees to groups to answer this question. Each group has to write the answer in small cards, present and discuss them.

4- One of the facilitators presented another question:

In which context does mepeace operate?

As usual the trainees are divided into groups to find an answer to this question, present and discuss it.

5- One of the facilitator asked the trainers to divide their ideas about the previous two questions to:

On the horizon, Rising, Established and Dying.

Each group works to classify its own ideas into four headings, present and discuss them.

B- On Friday 29th of January:

1- The training started at 9 a.m. The facilitator greeted the trainees and asked them to brainstorm things that we did the day before.

2- The facilitator asked us to look again at the mentioned below question to find words in this question and define it in our own way (as we understood them):

How can mepeace become a borderless community of individuals and organizations working effectively to achieve peace and social justice?

The trainers worked in groups to define and present their own definitions to the words they had already chosen.

Example: The word "peace" means: Two states that live in equality, security, coexistence and stability.

3- One of the facilitator showed two questions:

a- What will MEPEACE look like in 3-5 years from now?

b- What difference it will have made?

Each group has to write the ideas in small cards, present and discuss them.

Examples:

a- 1- To have more members in the future (peace makers).

2- International fame to this organization.

3- To be effective organization in peace making.

b- 1- More role in media.

2- more meetings on the ground and sharing.

4- One of the facilitators presented and discussed a new topics:

a- Force field analysis: To realize and analyze two types of forces:

1- Forces holding us back. 2- Forces helping.

The facilitator divided us to groups to write down and recognize the two types of forces. Each group has to write a wallpaper at least that includes ideas and examples about the forces.

C- On Saturday 30th of January:

1- The training started at 9 a.m. One of the facilitators greeted the participants. The facilitator asked the trainees to tell what did they learn from force field analysis? and how can this analysis improve our works as peace makers?.

2- One of the facilitators presented a new question:

What do the hindering forces prevent us from achieving?

Each group has to think about four hindering forces at least and say what each hindering force prevents or stops.

3- The facilitators focus on two topics in their presentations and discussions:

a- Conflict: The facilitator discussed the conditions and possible consequences of any conflict.

b- Violence: The facilitator drew violence triangle which consisted of three parts:

1- Direct violence: violence in behaviour.

2- Structured violence: violence in system and structure (violence in context).

3- Assumptions and attitudes: like fear, mistrust, hatred, misunderstand, lack of communication and traditional mentality.

Second weekend (4th-6th February, 2010)

A- On Thursday 4th of February:

1- The training started at 5 p.m when the facilitators greeted the trainees and thanked them for attendance in such bad weather.

2- One of the facilitators presented and discussed the first topic "Negotiations". The presentation included rules of negotiation such as: active listening (to listen more than talk), find commonalities (things we can share), use 'yes' rather than 'but', eye contact ……………… etc.

3- The facilitators presented two triangles. Each triangle consisted of three parts: behaviour, context and assumption (attitude). The facilitators divided the trainees to two national groups (a group for Palestinians and the other group for Israelis). Each group has to write ideas about what do they (the group members) think about the other side. At the end, the facilitators presented the works of the two groups to discuss them.

b- On Friday 5th of February:

1- The training started at 9 a.m when the facilitators present a question:

How do I deal with conflict?

The facilitators presented five ways of dealing with conflict such as: compromise, avoidance, transcendence…… etc . They asked each trainee to choose his own way.

2- One of the facilitators presented a new question:

How do the helping forces support us as peace makers?

The facilitators divided the trainees to groups to discuss the question and find answers. Each group has to write its own ideas on small cards and present them.

3- One of the facilitators presented another question:

What are the innovative and practical actions we can take to build our strengths to deal with our constrains in order to achieve our vision?

As usual the facilitators the trainees to groups to discuss the question and find answers. Each group has to write its own ideas on small cards and present them. After discussion the trainees summarize their answers to this question in three headings:

a- Making MEPEACE sustainable.

b- Transforming reality.

c- Enabling social change.

4- One of the facilitators presented a table titled with "Strategic Direction". This table includes three columns: The first column "current reality", the second column "first-year accomplishment" and the third "success indicators".

The facilitators divided the trainees to four groups to put their own ideas and expectations in the table. Each group has to it's present the table and discuss it.

5- One of the facilitators presented a new topic:

"Quarterly Calendar Section" to make first year timeline arrangement.

The facilitator presented two questions:

a- What is our timeline for completion of first year accomplishments?

b- Decide when each accomplishment will be achieved?

The facilitators divided the trainees to groups to think and order the first year accomplishments to the four quarters of the year (first quarter, second quarter, third quarter and fourth quarter).

At the end of the training, the coordinators to this training handed a questionnaire to every trainee to fill it about the training and the new things he/she learned.

We start to say we can do something and we have proceed to say we will do any thing
and we need "mepeace members" in our process to help us
and as we used to say it ""yes we can""
