Love your innocent "just asking" attitude. Zionism is the nationalism of the jews - The state religion of Israel. One can be a moslem or even a christian zionist. The Jews-a people with a common language and history joined the 19th century trend to also have a sovereign  territory - army - government - stamps etc. One can be a Jew and believe in the law of moses and an interventionist god and moral code and not be a zionist. The Israeli state claims to speak for jews worldwide but it is substituting the state for religion.  This is common in our world that is ruled by nation states.  I wish to point out Albert Einstein's take on this. When asked to be the first president of Israel. "Nationalism is a childhood disease of the human race and if I were president (of Israel) I would need to tell Israelis things they do not want to hear. Jesus of Nazereth (another Jew) said: my kingdom is not of this world. Akhotkha says: we are post-zionist, Hitler is dead. and a worship of land or volk is just a stumbling block on the way to truth.

A good publication for you to read is "The Origins of Totalitarianism" by Hannah Arendt, published in 1951.  She was a political theorist, who talks about how imperialism (Czarist Russia) and Stalinist Communism helped shape political Anti-Semitism.  Also, about Nazism, and its imperialistic roots in Hapsburg Vienna.  Good background information about the very complicated subject of Anti-Semitism, and of course, how it feed into political Zionism.

When Henry Ford purchased "The Dearborn Independent" in 1918, he used the publication to publish numerous Anti-Semitic materials.  Among them was "The International Jew:  The World's Foremost Problem."  Ford apparently did not have the same outlook, that existed in Czarist Russia.  Czarist Russia was prone to insurrection and rebellion, which was embraced by minorities, the most pertinent being the Jews.  That was the reason why Stalin set up Birobidzahn in Siberia to get the Jews out of the European part of Russia, and settled in Siberia, and also to watch a growing and threatening Japan.  Ford never embraced how Jews could be used the United States, just that they were a threat.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is strongly believed to have been authored by Pyotr Ivanovich Rachkovsky of the Russian Secret Police in 1903 as a tool against the rising revolutionary movement in Czarist Russia.  It became more of a tool for Anti-Semitism, when Henry Ford funded the printing of 500,000 copies in the United States during the 1920's.

The way Israeli Jews and American Jews envision Zionism has a great deal of disparities to it.  When Meir Kahane -- an American Jew who founded the Jewish Defense League in the United States, and the Kach Party in Israel -- he wanted no Arabs on it.  The Israeli Supreme Court outlawed the Kach Party, so there are internal controls within Israel, against having Arab-free lands.  But American Jews will loudly proclaim that is what they want.  American Jews will make Zionism into a religion, because of a lack of knowledge about Halachic law, rituals, and history.  So it is inferiority complex.  "The only way I can feel Jewish, is by hating Arabs and/or Muslims."  We see this on this website all of the time.

One thing that has to be taken into consideration, is that Zionism evolves.  Evolves from a Jewish homeland in Palestine, to a Jewish homeland living amongst its neighbors.  The big flaw was when Theodor Herzl published his "Der Judenstaat," the Arabs of Palestine was never once mentioned.  When the Olim arrived in Palestine, it was "oops, who are these people?"  That oops needs to be corrected.  It began as Menachem Begin, an old school Zionist, fully agreeing to the 1979 peace accords with Egypt.  Then with Yitzhak Rabin signing the Oslo Accords with Yasir Arafat.  But the Oslo Accords got frozen in 1993, it is now 2012, and time to thaw them out.  So Zionism can continue to evolve.  Zionism can evolve the same way communism did in China.  You look at China now, and the only thing communist is their government, but by no means their economy.  Economy will play a major role in Zionism evolving, Israel just had its credit rating increased, but the Palestinian Authority is on the verge of collapse.  If the West Bank and Gaza, become an independent Palestine, then it would qualify for multi-lateral development assistance from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, thus building it up to be a trading partner with Israel.  Edmond James de Rothschild funded Jewish ventures in Palestine, now it is the other way around.  For the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund should be funding ventures in an independent Palestine.  It will be for both Israel and the Palestinian Authority's sake.
