Dear Maria,

I am glad to have met you here. I have sent you a request to be my friend and to have you in my list of contacts.

It is not nice to live in a country which is divided and with UN soldiers to keep peace. I have known this state of affairs here in Germany before the demolishing of the wall in Berlin and the opening of the frontiers, I would prefer barriers, not only between East and West but also in the minds of the people. It will another decade or two before those living in East Germany will grasp the Germany is united. It could be the same in Cyprus or am I mistaken? You can contact me, if you so wish, under

Wish you a nice and enjoyable Sunday. Kindest regards.

Hi Maria,

Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam is a great place to volunteer.

Here is some information on volunteering at NS/WS:

According to the website Raida is organising the volunteers. I think the details are still current.

It was good to read your personal reflection on growing up in Cyprus. I remember meeting some Cypriots at Neve Shalom who came for the School of Peace.

You ask what I think about what is going on in Gaza...
I feel a sinking feeling in my heart about what is happening in Gaza now. I get impatient when I get stuck in a traffic jam. When I am trying to go somewhere and I cannot because the people in front of me are blocking the way; In the same way, I can feel that the majority of people on both sides of the border want to come to a new reality of relations of which they can be proud to live normal, (or extraordinary) lives, but it seems we have to wait until more people get off the highway. In this case the highways are the cow paths in our minds. A cow path is the route the cow takes every day without any reflection. The cow always ends up in the same place. We have habits of thinking that tell us we must respond in a certain way. People fall back on old patterns when they feel afraid or angry. The old patterns are often shared by the people you are most connected to.

What I want to see is people opening up to the humanity of our supposed enemies; To test the waters of peaceful engagement on a grand scale. I want people to be able to become conscious in the moment that they have a choice to cause harm or be of benefit. I would like people to dust off the all of the crud that has piled on top of their highest values, and to put those values out where both they and all of the people they come in contact with will see them.

I believe that for the most part people know how to behave towards other human beings. The problem comes when we only include some people as being as worthy as we are. People have different dreams of what it means to have a good life. We first learn the definition of a good life from our family and friends and the world that we grow up in. But we are capable of advancing our thinking and including more of the world. We live in an age where the entire world is connected. But we do not yet know how to all work together. Individually we have to be courageous and confront what holds us back individually and collectively from broadening our minds.

I have participated in dialog groups and found myself later regretting what I said. I say to myself, “I think that? I don’t want to think that”.
I myself have the most trouble when I am torn between my identity as a Jew and my identity as a world citizen. One is grounded in family, tradition, history. The other is pulled forward by my dreams and the present reality. We need to sort out individually and more importantly, collectively what are the treasures from our traditions and where we need let things go.

It is risky business, but a risk worth taking.
