I'm from everywhere and nowhere - raised and educated in the UK, emigrated to Israel, married to an Israeli, currently live and work in Japan, and currently studying for a PhD in Peace Education at the Dept of Peace Studies at Bradford U in the UK.

Well yes. That too. :-) So then you've probaly been through many cycles of loving and then hating Japan, and many in between. I've only spent about 2 years there. Once mainly in Tokyo for 12 months, and then many business trips that do not really count as "experience"

Yes. It is that contrast betwen ugliness and beauty and the ability of the Japanese to so selectively focus only on the beauty (sometimes) is an important lesson for us all. If you are new to Japan, you may find that the most important lesson of all. I know that I did.
