I've never understood violence, guns, wars. In 2004 my husband, grandson & I went to the demonstration in New York at the anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. I was wearing my "grandmothers uniting for peace" apron and handing out buttons saying the same. I was approached by a woman who asked "have you ever thought of going to Palestine?" I replied it had never entered my head. She gave me an email address and websites to check out; that was in March; in June I was on an airplane headed for the West Bank with a group of Women of a Certain Age. It was a life changing event. I have been an advocate for Palestinian Rights since. In May of this year I went to Gaza with an ad hoc delegation of 13 people with a letter of invitation from UNRWA. I thought I was prepared for the Gaza; I was not! The destruction and devastation is beyond description. There is evidence of the Israeli invasion and bombardment everywhere. The effects of the siege are inhumane and frightening. I will never understand how people can be treated the way the Palestinians, especially the ones in Gaza, are treated. I have to do all I am able to educate people as to the things I saw, listened to, experienced and believe....Palestinians deserve an end to the Occupation and to re-gain the Rights they have been denied for too long.
Why I want peace:
As a teenager I babysat for children, went to college to work with children, married and had children, worked in schools, welcomed a foster daughter into my family, became a grandmother and am now a great-grand-mother (at a very young age I might add) My life has focused on children...I want and believe they deserve, a peaceful world. As a grandmother I almost feel all the worlds children are mine to love, enjoy and protect. The greatest legacy they can receive is a world at peace. I wish and hope I will have done all within my power to assure them of Peace.
Interests and activities:
Right now Gaza has taken over my interests and pretty much my entire life. Grandchildren and great-grands are a delight, any activity we can think up is the special one of the moment. I knit, but tend not to finish projects as I should. Am a great cook, baker and entertainer, but don't do as much as I'd like. Have facilitated conflict resolution workshops and love that. Enjoy flowers, gardens and having my hands in the soil...it brings me peace.
Something you didn't know about me:
Believe it or not...I was a Republican Committeewoman.
