The burden of collective narrative

Posted on May 28, 2010 at 8:30pm 6 Comments

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, like every conflict between ethnic or national groups, is rooted in national and religious narratives. Cases in point are Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, Kosovo and more. Each side in the conflict uses a variety of justifications—historical, religious…

A need to re-evaluate Jewish-Arab action and dialogue groups in Israel

26 November 2009

JERUSALEM - Activities promoting coexistence, dialogue and education for a shared life between Arabs and Jews in Israel emerged in the late seventies. Today, after three decades, it is the ethical responsibility of those working in this area, whether on the ground or in academic research, to critically reassess the approaches and methods that have been used throughout the years.

In the last three decades there have been significant… Continue

Posted on March 30, 2009 at 6:00pm 2 Comments

Continue

If not acting and moving these days then when?

Posted on October 15, 2008 at 7:00pm 6 Comments

I have been in Akko (the name I prefer and not acre) the last few days after the clashes began, in order to try helping in any field and ways possible to prevent more damage and deterioration in the Arab-jewish relationship. Also I called every one I know from akko to ask about the real situation which not always described accurately by the media.

And in order to offer any help. I was asked by many organizations to distribute their call for action to all my colleagues and e-mail… Continue

Thank you.
I really like what you wrote. Coexistence between us is very important. We should realize how similar we are and this realization may help us overcome our differences... I totally identify with the idea of "peace education". Education gives hope for a brighter future and opens our minds. On a more personal note, I'd like to say that I also love to enrich myself culturally...
Salaam from... Jerusalem too! Aimee

Hi Amal,

I am sorry for not responding earlier. Yes, I did study with Professor Abu-Nimer, who was by far one of my favorite professors. Your story is also very interesting, I am interested in hearing more about your work in co-existence efforts.

Thank you very much dear Amal for your kind words and wishes,

I hope tp make a real progress for changing this area reallity towards peace.
It is not going to be easy... Nevertheless I will keep on doing what I did till now - find peace friends in the Gaza strip and having mutual projects with them.
I am quite in a shock right now but I wil recover and continue doing what my beleives tell me - that we are all entitled for good and happy life and that peace is possible - always possible !
With tears, Merav

Hi Amal, Thank you for your warm welcome.
I think its a good idea to open up a discussion about lessons learned, although I havent lived in South Africa for the past 9 years. I am more connected to what is happening here. I work for the Quartet (Russia, America, Europe and the United Nations). the main focus at the moment is intitutions and capacity building in the West Bank.
With best wishes,

hope to hear from you and specially about yourwork here

Thank you, Amal, for your beautiful and inspiring reply on the "Imagining the Holy Land" discussion a few days ago. I think you captured in a few brief lines the essence of my own overly long statement there. I hope to hear more from you here, and to get to know you better.
